Chair Yoga
Many proponents of yoga often proclaim that anyone of any age or in any condition of health can do yoga. This idea has given rise to Chair Yoga. Chair Yoga is a gentle practice that involves sitting in a chair or using a chair for support to perform simple variations of poses or asanas, pranayama and guided meditation. Those who perform Chair Yoga receive the same health benefits of those who practice with a mat on the floor.
Many of the asanas have been adapted from the Hatha Yoga cannon. Asanas such as Forward Bend, Spinal Twist, Side Stretch, a form of Sun Salutations and even Warrior II are performed with a the support of a chair. This allows the person who is recovering from an injury or those with disabilities to gradually build muscle and strengthen joints. The students become more willing to try new poses and go deeper because they know that the chair will allow them to move safely. For many suffering from chronic health issues, a sense of empowerment and self-awareness is gained.
Some studios offer Chair Yoga classes, but most classes will be found in nursing homes, assisted living centers, rehabilitation centers and adult day care centers. Lakshmi Voelker – Binder is one of many dedicated teachers who solely teaches Chair Yoga. She offers certifications around the country and has her own brand of DVD’s.
