Two words come to mind when describing the spirit of Acroyoga: playful and amazing. One partner lies on the floor with his legs straight up in the air, while the second partner is supported in a back bend across his feet. These oftentimes breathtaking feats are the creation of co-founders Jenny Sauer-Klein and Jason Nemer.
Acroyoga combines 3 elements: yoga asana, Thai massage and acrobatics wrapped up in the idea of metta (unconditional loving kindness). A typical Acroyoga class begins and ends with Circle Ceremony, where the students tap into their collective experience by “moving, breathing and sounding as one.” Soon the class progresses to asana practice, partner flow and inversions and spotting. Which all might sound very familiar, much like your typical yoga class. The progression diverges from there incorporating Partner Acrobatics. From here on out there becomes an increased level of risk, trust, concentration and presence with your partner as you each take turns flying through the air. Which leads to something called Therapeutic Flying aka Anit-Gravitational Spinal Elongation Therapy (sounds heavenly).
